Citizen's Police Academy

Michigan State University Police and Public Safety hosts a Citizen's Police Academy to give the community the opportunity to gain experience about various aspects of the department. Members of the academy meet the individuals behind the badge and gain insight into the operation of our police department. Citizens will learn how law enforcement agencies work together to enhance safety.

Classes are scheduled for eight weeks and are on Wednesday evenings from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. The first class begins on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, with the final session ending on October 30, 2024. Applications for the Fall 2024 Citizen's Police Academy will be open Monday, May 6, 2024 through Thursday, August 29, 2024. Selected applicants will receive an email or phone call. There is no cost to take part.

Classes occur at the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety building located at 1120 Red Cedar Rd, East Lansing, MI, 48824.

Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18-years-old
  • Must be able to pass a background check
  • Applicant must be an MSU student, faculty, staff, or local community member
  • 15-20 participants will be selected

Topics may include the following:

  • History
  • Patrol
  • K9 (police dog) demonstrations
  • Legal system
  • 911 operations
  • Traffic enforcement
  • Emergency management
  • Field training program
  • Specialized community divisions
