Special Victims Unit

Erin Held, Jessica Mitchell, and Aaron Schroeder

The Special Victims Unit is committed to ensuring that all survivors are treated with courtesy, sensitivity, dignity, understanding, and professionalism. The detectives assigned to the Special Victims Unit have received specialized training in trauma-informed interviewing, including the neurobiology of trauma. By understanding how trauma affects victims, officers can provide an experience that supports victims’ healing and recovery without re-traumatizing the victim. Detectives utilize a soft interview room, located at MSU DPPS, to interview survivors in a safe and supportive environment. The SVU investigates the following crimes:

  • Sex Crimes
  • Relationship Violence
  • Stalking and Harassment
  • Child Abuse
  • Vulnerable Adult Abuse
  • Missing Persons

Michigan State University has a policy that prohibits relationship violence and sexual misconduct, including sexual assault. MSU Police and Public Safety handles criminal investigations and works collaboratively with the MSU Office of Institutional Equity. It is important to MSU DPPS to ensure you receive the care and support needed. You can learn more about MSU's Culture of Support here.
