CATA temporarily reduces service frequencies on campus

UPDATE (2/2/22) – Complimentary parking at pay-by-plate and metered pay stations has been extended through 3/13/22.


UPDATE (1/31/22) – Michigan State University is providing complimentary parking at single- and multi-space metered pay stations for the next week to help offset challenges with CATA services. The university will reevaluate next week if that is still needed.

Additionally, CATA is providing “tripper” buses to help increase ride capacity on campus. These buses will primarily follow high-capacity routes.


EAST LANSING, Mich. — CATA’s Spartan Service, which prides itself on transporting our community around campus, has temporarily reduced service frequencies Monday – Friday on Routes 30, 31, 32, 33, 38 and 39 due to COVID-19-related staffing shortages. 

Buses will serve all stops and locations on designated routes during normal operating hours, but will depart less frequently from each stop, stopping every 30 minutes rather than every 7-15 minutes. This change has been in effect since Jan. 17 and continues through March 6when all Spartan Service concludes for the week of Spring Break. This is with the exception of Route 32 service to the Commuter Lot (Lot No. 89) and Clinical Center, which will operate on a 30-minute frequency. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we work with CATA to resume regular service on March 14, pending workforce availability. 

CATA’s Spartan Service operates seven days a week during fall and spring semesters. Nine dedicated free-fare campus routes serve university apartments, residence halls, commuter lots and main campus facilities throughout the day and evening, with more than 100 bus stops for convenient access.
