Faculty/Staff Permits

Permit Information

Employee permit renewal begins June 1, 2012.
Faculty/Staff parking permits can be ordered online at https://permits.police.msu.edu

All permits must be properly affixed to your windshield before they are considered valid, so please allow for mail time. The person to whom the privileges are granted is the only person who may park under the privileges; otherwise, the privileges are invalid.

There are three parking permit options available to regular employees.

Option One: The Full Privilege Permit. This permit allows access to all employee parking lots and ramps. Access privileges to gated lots are enabled on your Spartan ID Card. If you are a regular employee then CATA Bus privileges will also be enabled on your Spartan ID Card. You may register a single vehicle, two primary vehicles, or opt to use the validation system. Using the validation system allows you to register two vehicles while only having one on campus at a time. You may not register motorcycles on-line. The cost to register a single vehicle is $474 for July 1, 2012 – June 30, 2013. The cost to register two vehicles using the validation system is $534 for July 1, 2012 – June 30, 2013. You may pay by using American Express, Discover, Master Card, Visa, Check, money order, or use payroll deduction (if you qualify).

Option Two: The Commuter Lot Permit. This permit only allows parking in the Mt. Hope Road commuter lot (Lot 89). During the summer, between the end of Spring Semester finals week and the beginning of Fall semester, holders of this permit may also park in Lot 75 (east of University Village), Lot 83 (south of Holden Hall), and Lot 91 (south of Fee Hall). Parking gate access privileges are NOT enabled on your Spartan ID Card but CATA Bus privileges ARE if you are a regular employee. Currently this permit must be purchased in the Parking Office at the MSU Police Dept. The cost of the permit is $95.00 for the 2012-2013 academic year.

Option Three: The Commuter Plus Permit. Under a new pilot program, a permit is now available which combines some of the convenience of the Full Privilege Permit with some of the cost savings of the Commuter Permit. With this permit, when school is in session (including Finals week), your vehicle must be parked in the Mt. Hope commuter lot (lot 89). CATA bus service is available from the commuter lot to the Shaw Parking Ramp and transfers from there to other parts of campus. When school is not in session, your vehicle may park in ANY employee parking lot or ramp anywhere on campus. Parking gate privileges ARE enabled on your Spartan ID Card. The commuter plus permit will cost $246 for July 1, 2012 – June 30, 2013. Additionally , eight one-day Commuter Plus passes per year will be provided which will be valid in employee parking spaces. These plus passes are to be used at your discretion (to facilitate personal appointments, early departure from campus and the like) during the times when you would normally be required to park in the commuter lot. These one-day permits are not transferable and expire at the end of the term of your Commuter Plus permit. Currently this permit may only be purchased at the Parking Office in the MSU Police Dept. You may not purchase it on-line.

If the vehicle which is currently registered with the Parking Office is being repaired then you may come into the office for a temporary permit. If you will be driving a different vehicle for more than 3 or 4 days, you must bring something from the body shop stating the number of days they will have the vehicle. You must bring in the current vehicle registration for the loaner car when you come to get your temporary permit.

Employees with current permits may also request calendar permission one day only out of each calendar month. Calendar permission is obtained by calling the Parking Office at (517-355-8440) immediately upon arriving to work. Calendar permission is issued for whichever parking privileges you have purchased (for the commuter lot if you have purchased the commuter or commuter plus pass).

If you change vehicles, you must scrape off your permit and bring the pieces in for a new permit. There is a $2.00 replacement fee. You must bring in the current vehicle registration for the vehicle that you will register with the Parking Office, along with your faculty/staff ID. If you use the validator system then you must bring in both your scraped off permit and your validator. If you use the commuter plus permit then you will need to return all unused commuter plus passes along with your scraped off permit. You will be issued new commuter plus passes for each one returned.

If you are having your windshield replaced, you must scrape off your permit from your old windshield and bring in the pieces of the scraped off permit. We will then issue you a replacement permit for your new windshield. There is a $2.00 replacement fee.

If you change from registering a single vehicle to the validator system or vice versa then you must do so in person. You may not make this change online. You must scrape off your current permit and take it (even if it comes off in pieces) and your validator to the MSU Parking Office. There is a $2 replacement fee for the new permit.

To register your vehicle in person, you must bring in your current vehicle registration, faculty/staff ID, and a signed letter on letterhead from the Department Administrator which includes your employment status, job title, and start/end dates. Please notify us if you are on an academic calendar payroll schedule.
